The emerging concept of "solarpunk". A counter movement for the current social norms part 1

"solarpunk" envisions a future where technology and nature coexist, with the latter being prioritized. Today we will explore the surface of this concept.

The term “solarpunk” gained traction in the early 21st century and evolved into an artistic and literary movement that envisions a future where humanity and nature thrive together. Solarpunk is more than just a style; it explores ideas about equality, environmentalism, community, and social values that foster a sense of collective responsibility.

To understand solarpunk, you need to know where it came from. In a 2008 blog post, “From Steampunk to Solarpunk,” by an anonymous author, the term was first seen. This important movement started in response to the large challenges of the post-industrial era, a period characterized by mass production, ecological degradation, and large worker strikes. These important strikes stemmed from a deep yearning for a more equitable future where diligent work was rightfully compensated. Industrialization harmed people as well as the planet. This harm created the basis for the solarpunk vision.

In 2008, "The Great Recession" fueled the problem by revealing weaknesses in our systems and increasing demands for change. Solarpunk gave a bright vision of a future society that profoundly values renewable energy, ecological balance, and social justice. Our fundamental philosophy empowers everyone, offering necessary support customized to individual needs to guarantee universal access to opportunities. This meaningful movement signifies a dramatic departure from past exploitative practices, guiding us resolutely toward a substantially more sustainable and equitable future.

A solarpunk society is where economic crises arising due to class imbalances are things of the past. The need for workers to fight for rights or employers to exploit vulnerable classes doesn’t exist. Instead, there is collaboration toward shared goals between people: economic stability, environmental health, and technological progress. The focus is on creating a balanced system that improves environmental well-being, drives technological innovation to tackle ecological challenges, and cultivates social structures that support everyone’s happiness. By cultivating a cooperative spirit rather than a competitive one, solarpunk paints a picture of a future where sustainability isn’t just a goal; it’s a way of life.

Another key aspect of this movement is its emphasis on equity. Solarpunk strives to give each individual the tools for success, adjusting support based on specific needs. This approach cultivates a society where class divisions are minimized, allowing for greater equality. As philosopher John Rawls said, “Each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive total system of equal basic liberties compatible with a similar system of liberty for all.”

Our current political and economic systems often hinder such dreams, but we should challenge the norms threatening our society's future.
